However, to learn how to stop nail biting is never easy for those who have had a lifelong affliction to this most unwanted habit. It arguably is one of the toughest habits to break. There are so many things that go into nail biting. It is not a simple process of chewing on a fingernail or puling on a cuticle.

Nail biting involves an elaborate process that is most done in a subconscious state of mind. You don't think about it when you brush your hair from your forehead, or scratch a minor itch somewhere, you just do it without giving any full thought to the action. The same is true for the involved process of doing visual and tactile inspections by nail biters.

Nail Biting Is a Ritual. You Need Rituals to Learn How to Stop Nail Biting

Many non-nail biters will look at their nails consciously to admire them, or check for potential grooming needs that will be done later in private. They do this with no urge to remove a hangnail or correct a jagged fingernail, which is what happens when a nail biter looks at or feels his or her nail. That is the preparation that stimulates the brain into a desirous action.

I believe there is some kind of chemical reaction in the brain. Not unlike anticipating something pleasurable about to happen. Addicts are known to experience pre-high symptoms, lovers are known to have a quickened pulse and heightenend feelings of sensuality before any physical activity takes place.

You can put cigarettes and alcohol out of sight, you can stay away from most other temptations while you build your will power, but your fingers are always with you. As such, it's tougher to beat than any non-nail biter could ever imagine.

To stop nail biting, you need to train yourself to recognize your biting habits and then you need to train yourself to use alternative behavior patterns so you can overcome the powerful urges to groom your nails and cuticles by biting and pulling instead of using proper implements in private in a a manicure salon. That is what I teach in my book, How to Stop Nail Biting

To Stop Nail Biting You Start with Desire to Quit. Then You Need Nail Grooming Products to Help You Stay On Track

The first thing you start with is the desire. You have to have a plan and a fall back plan too. You get all that in my book. Additionally, you need the proper nail grooming tools to help you. To begin with, you might need some help from a product like Control-It! 3 Jar ~ 21 Day Fingernail Biting Treatment OMEGA3 Extra Strength. This doctor recommended cream heals cuticles, unlike polish that drys cuticles, STRONGEST SUCCESS RATE Available.

You also need some hardener polish, even the guys. Some argue it dries the nails and it might. I argue having stronger nails, especially at the tips is more important than moisture in the early going. If you can keep from chipping your newly growing nails, you avoid wanting to get after the break, tear, jag or what have you that will trigger a biting sequence.

Quimica Alemana Nail Hardener is a popular and affordable option. And guys, you can smudge the polish as it dries to matte it a bit. If you are concerned about your vanity or masculinity, think about how crappy your nails look now. This is a minor tradeoff for a few weeks to get your nails back in shape and lower your biting recurrences in the process.

To Quit Nail Biting, You Must Have and Use the Proper Nail Grooming Tools

Minimally the other tools you need are clippers, nippers and a good file. I recommend Tweezerman Stainless Steel Squeeze and Snip: Cuticle and Hangnail Snipper It is easy to carry in pocket, purse or briefcase. Use it to carefully and cleanly trim your cuticles whenever you notice something not smooth. Don't get aggressive or over snip and cause sores or more damage.

For clippers, just about any will do. If you want something more of a better quality than you find in the drugstore, try the Tweezerman Folding Nail Clipper. I have found the Tweezerman brand to offer consistently great value and high quality products. That is why I also like the Tweezerman Ceramic Folding Pocket File. It is a little bulky as its only drawback. An alternative is the Two Piece Men's Nail Kit in Black Leather Case. It contains a file and clipper in a nice case.

You want to quit nail biting. It is not only a bad and embarrassing habit. It is a lonely one. I don't need to tell you. this you already know it.

The medical term for nail biting is onychophagia. It is considered an impluse control disorder. Some other related body-focused repetitive behaviors are dermatillomania (skin picking), dermatophagia (skin biting) or trichotillomania (urge to pull out hair). Just reading those tems makes me want to quit. Mostly what makes me want to quit is when someone I want to impress sees the mess on my fingers and makes a face without knowing I am seeing their unguarded reaction. It makes me feel uncomfortable, ashamed and creates a losss of confidence, at least momentarily.

You also already know it is a seriously hard habit to break. It's not like anybody who bites their nails chose this. I mean why would anyone consciously choose nail biting over having normal healthy nails? When I say you are not alone, I mean there are millions of people who suffer the same way you do. What they have in common is there is no surefire easy cure to quit nail biting.

There are plenty of websites with people offering solutions, but most of the claims seem too good to be true. Just like in other parts of your life, it is almost always accurate that if you suspect something is not right about some claim of help, your instincts are nearly always right. This is especially true when those claims have to do with changing deeply ingrained habits.

There are many claims of easy stop nail biting fixes. Buyer Beware!

It's easy to want to believe them because part of you is desperate to learn how to stop nail biting. What you have to realize is another part of you is just as desperate to keep the habit alive. The awareness and acceptance is part of a huge first step to changing your cuticle pulling and nail biting habits. There is much more to it than that. It takes a serious committment of your time, energy and effort to learn how to become vigilant enough so you can quit. Another part no one ever bothers to teach you is that your greatest danger to relapse comes after your greatest success in quitting nail biting.

How many times have you stopped? I bet more than you can count. And, I bet some of those times your nails were starting to look pretty good. But, then something happens that triggers a response and in a matter of a few minutes you wreck weeks or even months of carefully avoiding your nailbiting habits as slip into an almost unconscious state of biting. If you are reading this, you don't need to tell me you get it and it has happened to you because I already know it has, repeatedly.

Here's the good news. Nail biting won't kill you. Probably won't ruin your health like so many other bad things people do to themselves like drinking, smoking, or overeating. You cause infections from open sores, but you are not going to die from anything related to nail biting. And, the news gets better when you come to realize you are not alone and you can learn to how to stop nail biting permanently.

There are reasonable options that work for most people who truly want to quit

You can find methods in my book that are certain to help most nail biters. I never overpromise and say what worked for me will universally work for everyone. Just as I believe there are levels of addiction to drinking, smoking, eating, sex and other nearly uncontrollable habits, I believe the same is true for nail biters. I have known some people who were able to quit smoking relatively easily. I have known others who continue to smoke through the hole in their trachea after they had throat cancer surgery due to smoking. If you are that hooked on nail biting, what I teach to help you quit may not be enough.

You have little to lose and much to gain by reading my book. You'd spend more on some nasty tasting polish treatment.

However, if you are not on the extreme side, I believe you can learn my techniques to quit your nail biting habit for good. You have to want to quit worse than you want to continue biting your nails. You have to be willing to repetitively teach youself to recognize not your biting habits, but the triggers that lead to the biting, and then you have to be willing to repetitively practice aversion techniques so you can switch your urge to bite your nails. Lastly, you have to realize that your worst days are far ahead and need to know how to prepare to avoid disaster after your guard is down.

If you can accept, believe, learn and practice these things routinely, you are a great candidate for getting true long-lasting help from my book, How to Stop Nail Biting. You can click on the book on the top right of this page and order it from Amazon.com in paperback, or download onto your Kindle .

Learn and to Use Good Groom Techniques, Tools and Products

One of the things you learn in my book is to learn to groom your nails and cuticles. The Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme product shown above is perfect for men and women because it works and can be easily carried in purse or pocket. Make sure you have used a high quality Stainless Steel Cuticle and Hangnail Snipper to remove dead skin and hang nails, then massage your nails and cuticles and skin around your nails with Burt's Cuticle Creme. By eliminating the nagging ragged skin, you greatly reduce your temptation your skin picking and pulling or biting your cuticles.

Nail biting and skin picking are related disorders. Oncyhophagia is the medical term for nail biting. At the heart of it, both have so many similarities and it is quite common for one person to have problems with both these conditions. Those who do suffer from them often are experts at hiding them from others.

The Internet has many offering fantastic too good to be true methods to quit. One prominent and highly marketed program with tons of paid affiliates pushing it is some nine minute cure. It's tempting to want to believe such claims. Who wouldn't want to get rid of a lifelong bad habit in a short time. But, can you really believe such a fantastic claim is possible? If it sounds to good to be true, you should be smart enough to know what to believe.

There are many ways you can learn how to stop biting your nails.

Here are seven methods you can incorporate into your efforts to quit nail biting. You will find many of these suggestions discussed in greater detail in the How to Stop Nail Biting book, (which is now available on Kindle):

Groom your nails - If your nails are bitten, ugly and chewed up, you probably are demotivated to spend time grooming them. This is completely wrong. It is always important to learn proper manicure and grooming treatment for your nails. It is imperative in the early stages. Doing this regularly helps you start thinking about your nails in a positive manner. Having the right attitude helps you strengthen your resolve to quit and not go back. Get the right tools to make job easier. Here is a link to nail care tool you can use.

Keep your hands busy - Idle time is the devil’s playground, so the saying goes. Well the same is true for nail biting. If you are occupied, you are less prone to casually biting your nails. If you bite while watching television, or at some other relaxed time, make sure you have something you can hold to keep your hands busy. Worry beads, rubber squeeze balls, exer-grips, et cetera. A good example and wonderful recommeded product is the ZON Hand Massage Ball. Or, you can try knitting or pick up some worry beads like these on this beautiful Round Lapis Bead Bracelet.

Work on your will power - It takes more than will power to quit for good, but without it you have no chance to quit in the first place. Work on quitting something else, or changing another aspect of your life. Determine to do something routinely and then do it routinely. Something you have never done before. Like take a walk for lunch. Replace dessert with a piece of fruit. It sounds like you are making things harder to take on something else. What it is doing is exercising your will power. The more confidence you have in achieving one thing will help you with the other, and you get a double benefit of overall personal improvement.

Understand your trigger - You need to know the psychology and physiology of your biting rituals. They are far more complex than you imagine. Much of what leads to nail biting is done on a nearly subconscious level. Begin to understand what those rituals are so you can identify them and develop alternate means to divert and re-route your ritual to something not destructive to your nails.

Practice your avoidance techniques - Avoidance techniques are more than rubber bands, mantras, or bitter polish. These involve neuro-linguistic programming, which is described on Wikipedia as: Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach to psychotherapy and organizational change based on "a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behavior and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them" and "a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behavior.

Visualize your grown nails – Most successful people use visualization techniques to help them train their body and mind on what to do and how to do things in a certain way so they get the best results. A skier might imagine every turn on the slope, a golfer every hole and shot on a course, a salesman presenting a product, asking for the business and closing the sale. Your job is to visualize your great looking nails and the proud feeling you have when you use your hands in front of people instead of self-consciously and sometimes awkwardly trying to avoid letting others see the product of your nail biting habit.

Diet and exercise - Getting enough calcium is essential to help for nail biters whose fingernails are brittle and with chewed ragged cuticles. Calcium is recommended for dieters as well. Many doctors recommend a daily intake of 1200 mg. Besides improving your fingernail health, you get the side benefit of helping to strengthen your bones. Some herbs that include silica in them are horsetail, oatstraw, and nettle. Silica is a substance shown to strengthen fingernails. Your nails are made up of keratin. Make sure you are getting adequate amounts of amino acid, vitamin C, vitamin E and biotin in combination. Ridges in your nails can be eliminated or lessened by regular use of vitamin B. Zinc deficiency can lead to white spots on the nail. It is common in many women to see a drop in their zinc levels just before a menstrual period. Exercise is beneficial on its own merit. Regular exercise, as mentioned in the section on will power, leads to an improved sense of your well being and your overall health. The better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to be truly determined to stop nail biting.

You bite your nails, or want to help someone you know to learn how to stop nail biitng? Otherwise, you would not be reading this post. You already know id is a bad habit that non-nail biters find icky and can’t fathom why anyone would do it. Besides the appearance and loss of social status issues, nail biting presents health risks.

Onychophagy means nail biting in medical terms

There is a medical term for the compulsive habit of nail biting. It is called onychophagy, which is also spelled, onychophagia, is the word doctors use to describe nails deformed by chronic nail biting. There are numerous remedies, solutions, products, and gimmicks that can help a nail biter reverse the habit. Just learning how to maintain nails with regular manicures can greatly alleviate the condition for many. To quit long term, you need more help than having a manicure. One place you can get it is in my book, How to Stop Nail Biting, which is available on Amazon.com and other online bookstores.

Nail biting is not just unsightly, it can make you sick

Many nail biters can learn to quit on their own, but for those for who suffer from it as a severe and a deeply ingrained compulsive habit, seeking professional medical help may be advised. The act of nail biting in itself typically is not a cause of llong-term damage. Nevertheless, the act of repeatedly putting your fingers in your mouth throughout the day can lead to medical problems. Consider just doing this is at least a very unhygienic practice. Your fingertips are loaded with bacteria, which puts you at varying degrees of risk when it enters your body through your mouth.

Besides carrying bacteria, your fingers are a conduit for viruses. As such, you greatly increase your chances of catching a cold or another some other type of infection. If you also pull or bite your cuticles, you create open sores that can lead to serious staph infections. These bad oral fixation habits can cause preexisting skin infection to get worse or persist.

If you add to your list of reasons to learn how to stop nail biting that it is not only unsightly, but also unhealthy, it is just one more reason to quit nailbiting now. Follow this link to find useful tools and products to help you stop nail biting.

Just because you are young, talented, rich and beautiful doesn’t mean you can escape nail biting

In my book, How to Stop Nail Biting, I mention some famous people who were or are nail biters. These include Princess Diana, Jackie Onassis, Britney Spears, and LeBron James. Then not too long ago, I saw this picture taken of Maria Sharapova. She is one of the richest female athletes in the world. She is admired nearly as much for her beauty as Anna Kournikova. She has had much more success on the courts than Kournikova, and only injuries have kept her from winning more Grand Slam titles.

Still despite all her achievements, she is still struck with the same malady as millions of ordinary folks. The curse of being a habitual nail biter. The picture here tells the story. One any nail biter reading this can understand. That is, despite valiant efforts, nail biting can be one of the hardest habits to break. If it is not an addiction, it is damn close. You know what I mean.

It’s because of this I wrote my book. It gives real hope, not false quick fix promises on how to permanently quit. Just about anybody can quit for a spell. I bet Maria has countless times only to revert to the habit in a moment of weakness. There are ways to quit and there are other ways to combat the temptation to start again. That’s what you learn in my book. It’s only about $15.oo on Amazon.com. Order it and a decent nail file and you get the shipping free. Why wouldn’t you spend a few bucks to see if I can help you conquer an embarrassing habit?

I will never claim that it is easy to quit nail biting. You already know it is not. Nor, will I say you will be successful on your first attempt to quit nailbiting using my techniques. What you will get is a system that can work for you. It doesn’t require treatment, or expensive programming, programs or hypnosis. It does require you to have great desire to change your habit. You have to be willing to work at replacing your ingrained habits with other ones. Just quitting almost never works. You have to replace your old bad habit with others that are not detrimental to your nails. Read the book and teach yourself to learn how to stop nail biting once and for all. Write me when you do!

If you think you should stop nailbiting just because it is an embarrassing negative habit, you are right. But, there are more reasons than just that. It can be costly to your health and your wallet. To learn to quit nail biting may be be one of the hardest things you will ever do. Hopefully this article will help give you more reason you should stop nail biting now.

In an article on Huffington Post, Dr. Thomas P. Connelly, D.D.S. talks about how nail biting is harmful to you:

It’s unsanitary: Your fingers are pretty much involved in almost everything you do. Even with frequent hand-washing, your fingers are still dirty. Your fingernails are almost twice as dirty as your fingers. Since fingernails are not the easiest places in the world to clean, there’s all manner of germs and bacteria underneath there– germs you really don’t want in your mouth. And when you bite your nails, you are inviting these germs into your mouth (and chewing them, etc.) Plus, bitten nails can be jagged, and may cut the gums, allowing these undesirable germs to easily access your bloodstream.

It’s unsanitary (part two) – If you bite your nails close enough to irritate your cuticles and/or break the skin, the germ transfer from your mouth to the open wound is not really the best thing in the world for you. The two “germiest” places on your body are generally your hands/fingernails and your mouth. So it’s pretty easy to see why putting these two together in the form of nail biting is not desirable.

It’s not good for your looks: Nail biting really isn’t the most pleasant thing to watch. But you likely already knew that. Plus, the nails themselves are far from attractive (manicured they aren’t!)

It’s not good for your teeth: Of course I take a personal interest in this part. But your teeth are not meant to be chewing all the time. Nail biting tends to keep your teeth in constant motion, which can wear them down faster than a non-nail biter’s. In addition, nail biting puts a large amount of stress on your front teeth, and can weaken them, contribute to the teeth becoming crooked / misaligned, etc.

It’s not good for teeth with braces, either: This one is more for the kids (or adults with braces), but since braces already put pressure on teeth, the additional pressure from nail biting really isn’t welcome, and could lead to the weakening of the roots.

It can be costly: According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), nail biting can result in up to $4,000 in additional dental bills over one lifetime. That’s quite a bit of money. Of course, that doesn’t take into account how much time/money being sick from all the germ transfers costs you, too. I could not find hard data on this (largely because it’s unlikely a significant study was done), but it’s not a stretch to assume that, all else being equal, nail biters will get sick more often during their lifetime than those who do not bite their nails.

Yes, sheer willpower will get you to quit for a period… maybe long, maybe short. But, sooner or later if you aren’t taking good care of your nails, if you aren’t taking pride in the fact they have grown, if you aren’t grooming them and your cuticles, then you are going to relapse. It might be months or years before you get your nails to grow back again.

If you have grown your nails only to lose the battle against keeping them out of your mouth and looking good, then you know what I’m say is 100% accurate. It’s an ongoing battle. One you cannot win on your own without doing more than overcoming the tremendous urge to bite your nails. Here are a couple of tools, not that you don’t need even more, that will help you in your battle.

Two items you must have in your pocket or purse are a file and a cuticle nipper. Women can use all manner of files that neatly fit in their purse. Both sexes can use the Tweezerman Stainless Steel Cuticle Nipper and Cuticle Pusher. It’s not too bulky and will save you time again from going to town on a nagging cuticle.

If you think this is too much bother, or you might be embarrassed to have it in your purse or pocket, then you are not committed to quitting your nail biting habit. Basically, you are stuck with your habit and it is not worth the time, effort and expense to order this tool.

Another “must-have” tool is a decent file. Females can have their choice of whatever they like that conveniently fits in their purse. Men, on the other hand, need something compact. Once again, I will recommend a tool from the reliable and serviceable Tweezerman family of nail care products.

The Tweezerman His Pocket Ceramic Nail File/ Cleaner is a gem. I recommend it over the files you that come on the

typical nail clipper. Those are very rough and hard to get a smooth edge, especially on nails that are soft from years of being bitten. This nail file is a little too thick for my taste. So, it takes some used to figuring out how to get the proper angle on the nail, but it’s compact and does a great job for you.

Get these two tools and you are off to a good start towards helping yourself learn how to stop nail biting permanently. To see an even broader range of products designed to help you check out these helpful nail care tools and these useful nail care products.

I’m betting anyone who ever bit their nails has tried to quit and failed. It’s that strong a bad habit. Having a relapse is a shame, but it’s not the end of the world, or even the end of your quest to stop nail biting. It is just a simple reminder of how hard it is to break free once and for all.

What do you do now that you have chewed your nails and cuticles back to an embarrassing state? Try to realize what triggered the initial reaction that got you started again. Burn that incident in your head and make a written vow to not let a similar situation affect you again. Get your file out and groom your nails. Taking care of your nails is part of the process to restoring your self-esteem and pride. Get back into the practices that got you on the road to recovery. If you have read a book like mine, How to Stop Nail Biting. Use whatever helped you get motivated and stay firm in the first place.

Keep in mind that it is the rare person, if one such exists, that only needed to quit one time before breaking free forever. This is a process; a journey that will have twists and turns and perhaps some relapses. Get back to visualizing your newly grown nails and get to work on getting over the setback to start over again.
